It’s not every day that a medical pioneer will discredit his own discovery—much less call it a “public health disaster.” And yet, that’s exactly what Richard J. Ablin, creator of the prostate-specific antigen (PSA) test, did last month in an opinion piece he wrote for The New York Times.
In his recent op-ed, Ablin cites the following facts: The PSA test, which measures the amount of prostate antigen a man has in his blood, is the most commonly used tool for detecting prostate cancer in the United States—furnishing its manufacturers with a profit of at least three billion dollars each year.
